Beware of the Side effects of Lipsticks while decking up this Festive Season

Anando Sangbad:Festive make-up calls for bright lips and with social media updates being a mandate for the Gen Y, a tinted pout is not to be skipped at any cost. However, dermatologists warn against some serious side-effects of generous use of lipsticks and lip-gloss.

Dr. Anusree Gangopadhyay, Consultant Dermatologist at Fortis Hospital Anandapur states, “Lipsticks contain lead and constant use can have some irreversible harmful effects.” Lead, as we all are aware of, is harmful, even if it enters our body in small quantities. Apart from lead, cheap lipsticks, available in stores and roadside stalls also contain some carcinogenic elements like cadmium and chromium.

Apart from the chemical content, the dermatologist warns, “Lipstick can cause allergic contact dermatitis which manifests as irritation, chapping of lips and surrounding skin.” She strictly advises using the product causing the allergic reaction at the initial stage itself.

With television commercials harping about the long-stay and matte lip colors, the consumers prefer to purchase these to avoid the need for touch up. However, Dr. Gangopadhyay has a different take on this new trend. She clarifies, “It is better to go for cream-based lipsticks than matte finished ones, as the former keeps the lip moisturized.  With use of long-stay matte lipstick, the lip loses its natural moisture content and becomes dry, looks dull and blackish.” However, as per experts, touching up your lipstick more than twice a day can lead to long term repercussions.

However, the skin expert suggests applying a coat of lip balm and then the lipstick on top of it, to prevent drying of the lips. This, coupled with a day’s break from applying lip colour, will go a long way in ensuring luscious pink lips.
